Other sport activities associated with the garage are volleyball, badminton and an adventure zip-line, giving visitors an ultimate experience of watching the planting patchwork of the soil remediation in progress. As the land and soil quality begins to improve after the first 5 years, part of the site is focused on mixed-use smart redevelopment that maximizes and helps to economically stimulate the recreational surround. In addition, the phased urban design proposed a network of pedestrian pathways, bike paths, promenades and a forest running trail. Mirasol is the Spanish word for “sun”, but literally means “look at the sun.” Mirasol Park encourages citizens and the community of Nashville to look toward a bright, active, multi-modal, connected and economically supported center along the Cumberland River. The proposed infrastructure reintegrates the area with the East Nashville neighborhoods by turning the interstate into a signalized parkway. In addition the existing fragmented network of streets will be streamlined and a tram will take people through the entire riverfront area. The design is structured on center to a roundabout with an amphitheater created with recycled steel and concrete from the existing industrial site. The structure will serve as a striking reminder of the former site and its history by formally organizing the future development around this center. A variety of plantings will be used to remediate the degraded land over an indefinite amount of time in the future. These plantings will cycle based on the different materials that each species is more likely to accumulate. The sunflower will be heavily used to remediate the soil and is the inspiration for the overall landscape planting spiral grid structure. An overlay of opposing spirals, as seen in the head of a sunflower, creates the adaptive reuse framework. The pattern creates zones that upon being fully remediated can then be reoccupied with recreational use program and development. The landscape planning team, in collaboration with the architect and interior team, fostered an inclusive process for input and feedback. In response to the project siting along a planned reservoir and the context of the newly developed city neighborhood, the City government desires for the building program to connect people to nature and embody the Chinese idea of the harmonious existence of people and nature. The landscape design integrates the building program with the landscape to achieve this goal through carefully seating the building into a constructed hillside made up of wetland terraces that purify water to maintain a habitat pond. The Client team responded positively and allowed the team to expand their proposal scope to the adjacent open spaces. Mill City is an under-served, low-income community in what is called a "food desert" area. In the past, drugs and crime have taken over and causing businesses to relocate and the area has been neglected for decades. The team then conducted extensive research into the various programs and contemporary agricultural systems focused on integrating various enterprises with the goal of lowering operational costs and required labor for the farm. The depth of the paddocks along the back fence line was designed to accommodate temporary parking for community events while the angled orientation of the crop rows and orchards follow true N-S. The animals essentially provide labor by fertilizing and sanitizing the soil while recycling the nutrients in spent crop residues. The main responsibility of the farm helpers in this system is to move the sheep and chickens each week to a new grazing area. A large variety of fruits and vegetables is proposed to provide interest, educational opportunity, and even out the required labor throughout the year. This is in contrast to most farms with mono-cultures that require very large labor requirements in short windows at planting and harvest. This image illustrates the various market crops, cover crops, and grazing that occurs on a handful of vegetable plots throughout the different seasons. This reduces erosion and compaction of the soil, fixes nitrogen during the growing season and creates additional forage for the livestock when they come through and graze the crop residues.
